Biography

Gabriel Craig and Amy Weiks are a Detroit-based artist team. Craig is a nationally renowned metalsmith, writer and craft activist who has exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Contemporary Craft in Portland, OR, and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX. His critical writing has appeared in craft publications including Metalsmith, American Craft, and Surface Design Journal. Amy Weiks is an artist with an interdisciplinary practice rooted in photography, printmaking, metalsmithing and domestic crafts. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US including exhibitions at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN, and at Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco, CA. They have lectured throughout the country and held numerous residencies including at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft in 2009-10 and the California College of Arts in 2013. In 2012, they founded Smith Shop a nationally acclaimed metalworking studio in Detroit. Craig received his BFA from Western Michigan University and his MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Weiks earned her BFA from Western Michigan University and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Their artistic work is represented by Form & Concept Gallery, in Santa Fe, NM.
